2022 WSM Day Three Results
The final day of the Qualifying Stage is a wrap. It’s been an interesting one, folks. ICYMI, here are the notable storylines:
- Mark Felix set a new world record in the Wrecking Ball Hold with an incredible time of 2:20.49.
- Gabriel Rhéaume made it to the Final through the Stone-Off with the initiative (he lifted first).
- After the Stone-Off, five more men became Finalists. They are: Gabriel Rhéaume, Brian Shaw, Trey Mitchell, Maxime Boudreault, and Eythor Ingolfsson Melsted.
Stone-Off Results
Two athletes — the second- and third-place finishers in each group — needed to hoist six stones, with the last stone being an AMRAP (as many reps as possible). The six stones, in order, weighed: 150 kilograms, 160 kilograms, 160 kilograms, 180 kilograms, 180 kilograms, and 200 kilograms.
Whoever finishes each Group in second place has an advantage in that they lift the stone second. That means if the first athlete fails to lift the stone, they’re automatically eliminated. This advantage is especially important during the AMRAP; even if both men hoist the stone the same number of times, the athlete with the initiative still loses if he fails to lift.

The question of whether or not the strongman who clinched groups would make legitimate attempts or ceremonial ones to secure the requisite points lingered in the crowd. The temperature at the start of the event was in the mid-60s (Fahrenheit).

Also, Evan Singleton was forced to withdraw after an undisclosed injury. It’s not clear when he sustained the injury. Hollands announced the news on the WSM Backstage Live! show.

2022 WSM Drop Outs
Unfortunately, it’s not unusual for strongmen to drop out of contests — either before the event starts or during. Here’s a list of competitors who have already withdrawn.
- Peiman Maheripourehir (visa issues)
- Rauno Heinla (reason unknown)
- Mateusz Kieliszkowski (ongoing leg injury)
- Pa O’Dwyer (reason unknown)
- Evan Singleton (anaphylactic shock. However, since he withdrew, medical staff has cleared him to return to competition.)
- Shane Flowers (apparent injury)
What to Know About the 2022 WSM
If you’re not a die-hard strongman fan, you can (and will) still enjoy the thrill of the competition. Here’s what you need to know about this year’s show to keep up with your local gym bros.
- Tom Stoltman is the returning champion. Last year, he defeated four-time WSM winner Brian Shaw in an epic Atlas Stone showdown to claim the coveted Barry Frank Trophy and become the first Scotsman to win the event. He won by three points — 45.5 to 42.5.
- This is the show’s second year in Sacramento and ninth time in California. In 2021, WSM inked a deal with the Visit Sacramento Sports Commission (VSSC). As a part of the deal, Sac-Town hosted the show in 2021, 2022, and will for a third year (date TBD).
- This is the first year that WSM is hosting a Fan Festival. It’ll be free and open to the public at the Capitol Mall and include food trucks, local vendors, special events, giveaways, and a general admission viewing area for fans to watch the action live.
- The Flintstone Barbell event is making a return after 17 years. The movement is a behind-the-neck press, except it eschews weight plates for giant rocks. At the 1995 WSM contest, strongman Gary Taylor successfully locked out 463 pounds. Brian Shaw, in training, hit a 445-pound behind-the-neck press with a standard barbell.
How Strongman is Scored
Strongman scoring is pretty straightforward. First place can earn as many points as there are competitors. In the Qualifying stage, you can earn a maximum of six points (since there are six athletes in each group). First place gets six points; second gets five, and so on. In the Finals, where there will be 10 competitors in total, first place gets 10 points; second gets nine, third gets eight, and so on.
In the event of a tie, points are split. If two athletes tie for second, you would add up the second and third place points and divide by two. So, in the WSM Finals, two athletes who tie for second earn 8.5 points each (nine plus eight divided by two).
