What To Look Out For In Tashkent
Russia has a presence at this World event for the first time in several years, and some of their athletes have leading entry totals. All of the following RWF athletes have entry totals that put them in medal contention:
RWF Weightlifters in Medal Contention
- Women’s 55KG — Svetlana Ershova
- Men’s 67KG — Zulfat Garaev
- Men’s 73KG — Sergei Petrov
- Women’s 59KG — Olga Te
- Women’s 64KG — Anastasiia Anzorova
- Men’s 81KG — Yarkin Vyacheslav
- Men’s 89KG — Roman Chepik, Artem Okulov
- Women’s 71KG — Evgeniia Guseva
- Women’s 76KG — Iana Sotieva
- Women’s 87KG — Dariia Akhmerova
- Men’s +109KG — Aleksey Lovchev
The sessions below appear to be the most competitive in terms of entry total spread:
- Men’s 81KG, Group A — five-kilogram spread
- Men’s 89KG, Group A — 10-kilogram spread
- Men’s 96KG, Group A — five-kilogram spread
- Women’s 71KG, Group A — larger spread, but only due to a few low outliers
Talakhadze does not have the highest entry total in the Men’s +109-kilogram class — he is listed with a 450-kilogram total, while Gor Minasyan and Varazdat Lalayan are both listed at 460 kilograms. However, that isn’t necessarily indicative of anything as Talakhadze does not have to make the first move on competition day.
Regarding Team USA, the following athletes have a decent chance at securing a medal, and potentially even taking gold based on their entry total:
- Meredith Alwine (71KG) — 240-kilogram entry total (tied for highest with Evgeniia Guseva)
- Mattie Rogers (76KG) — 245-kilogram entry total (within seven kilograms of Suhyeon Kim’s entry total)
- Sarah Robles (+87KG) — 280-kilogram entry total (within six kilograms of Younghee Son’s entry total)
This is shaping up to be a very interesting World Championships. The Men’s 81-kilogram session is likely to be an absolute war for the top spot. The A-group roster, given China’s absence, is astoundingly tight.
Mohamed Ihab is back for Egypt, Rodallegas was a 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games medalist, and Karlos Nasar recently hit a 175-kilogram snatch in training. But they’re just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the competitive climate in Tashkent — many other weightlifters stand to make strong moves on the platform over the next week.
